For this essay I have chosen to talk about Interpretation between Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet and William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. I believe that Baz Luhrmann has done a really good job making the interpretations from swords to guns and also the interpretation between the characters from the book and the characters from the movie for example their attitude has a huge effect on the how they spoke.

The first point to this interpretation is that Baz Luhrmann has kept the spirit of Romeo and Juliet by modernizing almost everything in the play. The first example is with Friar John, when Friar Lawrence is sending a message to Romeo as Romeo does not know of the plan that Juliet has. In the movie Friar John is the post office. Another example is a reference to the Merchant of Venice. When there is a scene where it shows bill boards flashing, on one of them it says the Merchant of Venice.

The first interpretation I am going to talk about is weapon interpretation. In the first scene where there is a street brawl at the petrol station. The swords are replaced with guns and on them they say 9mm sword. This is a play on the caliber of the bullet. Apart from making the guns swords he also gives the guns a picture of the Virgin Mary.

The next interpretation piece I am going to talk about is the interpretation of Christianity. On the guns it has an emblem of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus. In the film you see a statue of Christianity which I think represents unity. Instead of seeing Romeo and Juliet as Star Crossed Lovers you see them as sacrificial lovers. The two families cars have crosses on them as well as them having crosses on their necks.

Another piece of interpretation is when Mercutio dresses as a drag queen but we see him in the book as a tough and angry man but in the movie you see him more hyper and cool. Also a thing to note is that when Mercutio gives Romeo the tablet of ecstasy or LSD, it is supposed to be interpreted as love is a drug it makes you go crazy and wild which you see Romeo go dizzy and hyper.

The next piece of interpretation is when The Montague gang are on the beach and they play pool at a pool club called the globe theater as it is set on a stage. When Mercutio dies he dies on a stage which looks like the a replica of the globe theater stage.

Instead of Friar Lawrence talking to him self in the plant room, he talks to two boys whom are sitting next to each other which matching suits. What I also noticed was that when Mercutio is talking he talks a lot crazier than in the book. Benvolio is also a character to note about as he is also a lot crazier than expected.

Romeo is seen as a man of love and happiness in the book but in the film he acts bait more tough and violent more than a lover should be. What I mean by this is that a lover can be both aggressive and loving but a aggressive man whom is like Romeo as he doth not spare the life of Tybalt but murders him by shooting him after a car crash. If Romeo was a lover he would not kill his cousin in law.

Next a main thing to talk about is Juliet’s character as she does pull out a gun on friar Lawrence which clearly shows some form of aggression and violence which can be seen as both good and bad. This is good because it turns out that it was all a plan to make her parents upset and annoyed but the bad thing is that Romeo never finds out about the plan so he actually thinks that Juliet is dead so this could link to the other essay question which talks about fate.

The next thing that I will talk about is about the buildings at the beginning of the movie. Now my thought on this is that the family feud in this could be all down to the companies as the two buildings at the beginning have the labels Capulet and Montague, this could mean that the the companies had the same ideas but they could not join together and make this well what ever the idea is together but instead they start an endless war which ends in tragedy and leads to their children’s death.

Now the next thing that I should probably mention is that at the capulet party, lady capulet is smooching with her nephew Tybalt. Now this could be seen as a hallucination from when Romeo takes the Ecstasy tablet that Mercutio gives him before the party. What I also noticed about the party is that in the play version mr Capulet is not drunk and when he says don’t go after Romeo but make peace and don’t start a brawl but in the movie version he is all drunk as if whatever he says is just drunk talk which by the way he looked which really was hammered.

The next thing that has been interpreted by Baz Lurhmann is how he kept the spirit of a Elizabethan theatre and how he did this was all about how Verona was looking like for example every thing is ruined or destroyed because of the family brawls like the one in the beginning of the movie at the gas station where I believe one of the members from the gangs die. He also kept the spirit alive by making the words the original word for example at the party Juliet says ‘You kiss by th’ book’ and she also states this in the movie when Romeo kisses her at the party by the slow dance.

To conclude this essay I think that Baz Lurhmann has done an amazing job in interpreting an Elizabethan Theatre and making what ever it was that was old and he made it modern so yeah I guess this is it so yeah peace out oh and by the way that I have to give a huge thanks to /how was Christianity interpreted in Romeo and Juliet\
